My Memorably Long Road

I do give private art lessons.  But not the kind of lessons that say - "this is the process of creating art".  The students I have varying levels of  artists who need guidance in accomplishing their art according to their skills and comfort levels.

My long road to an experimental portrait

 I don't have one specific way to accomplishing a painting.  Sometimes I underpaint in blue, green, earth tones, even hot pink or purple etc lol!  I do create thumbnails first though.  And I either do a bunch of pencil studies or go directly to Photoshop.  But my studies are to determine composition and values and color arrangements.  Then I do fleshtone studies.  Then I go all over the place hahaha This particular commission, because client said, "Do whatever your artistic calling wants you to do."  So I took my time. This project took 3.5 years.  I wanted to express the energy the subject puts out.  For the longest time, the traditional way I paint portraits competed strongly with what my creative self wanted to do, it was quite a battle oye! My mood went all over the place.

After much denial and negotiating and finally reaching surrender and acceptance, I was worn out; ready to listen to my creative self.  I took the unexplored road to gold leaf and gold paints.  The subject likes bling and she looks loveliest among gold colors and she likes purples and pinks.  Very, very slowly, I proceeded this direction.  Things were finally "feeling" more comfortable.  I wasn't missing the defiance from where ever the heck that energy was coming from.  This was still a bit nerve wracking because I don't do commissions herky jerky.  I only allow myself more play when it's just "my art".

By the way, I usually either have TV or audible on when I'm painting because I need to divide my attention or I overthink things and scare myself.  Well I kid you not, when I finally felt I had just applied the last touch on the portrait, the trailer from from "Woman in Gold"  played on my studio TV!  WHOAH cue Twilight Zone music!  YEAH I felt like it was a sign of validation from Creative Universe giving me thumbs up for winning my battle the correct way!

Then Anna received her painting and she was delighted!  And immediately had it framed!!!  I was so dang worried when we were having tornado warnings, I was gonna get sooooo mad if the 3.5 year old project got flown to the land of OZ!  I suggested she saw the movie too which she did :)  Weeks later Mom and I went to see it too and loved my idol Helen Mirren.

Though my current commission pieces on the easel are traditional, I really enjoyed this project so much after the fact hahaha  I am happier that I didn't settle for my usual traditional style because it wouldn't have done Anna justice.

Today the buyer of a recent painting I published on Facebook posted a beautifully framed photo of the painting!  It really puts a big smile on my silly face when I see that my works live in good homes :)

I'm surprised this painting fell together in an hour.  I had an hour to produce something before I had to fix dinner but I still went ahead and grabbed a blank ACEO watercolor paper (btw a gift from a dear friend Barbara Ann Spencer Jump).  She was kind enough to gift me a variety of watercolor papers in 2.5x3.5 format! This is equivalent to winning the raffle ticket for me because I can only cut trapezoids for some reason!  Check out the submissions "Paint What You Paint With Challenge"

I felt SOOOO challenged by the DPW Old Mill challenge!  It's not so much that the reference photo was low resolution and dreary.  But I admit, I'm not a landscape artist and I'm especially not used to painting with a with a make-believe prettier picture in my head HAHAHA  So I submitted anyway, such as it was....

Finally, I took a picture of myself....rather, I happen to like this one picture I took recently of myself so I thought I'd paint it for the DPW All About Me challenge.  I started painting it before Romel Delatorre workshop, but I think was a mistake not to finish what I had started before the workshop because I was simply dying to paint when I got back!  It would have behooved me more to paint something on a blank canvas.  My saturated brain was not ready to go backwards.  So I'm disappointed in this painting.  I'd like to start painting with more subtlety.  We'll chalk this one up to painting while I'm in transition but I am sharing it here as starting point (fingers crossed).  We'll see where I go from here :)

CMAM Tea cup and Daffodils

This my contribution to Alice Thompson's Calypso Moon artist Movement. This month's subject objects we collect. We were instructed to show 2 items we collect but the day I was getting set up to paint my piece I was surprised by my neighbor along with her visiting granddaughter who had a handful of freshly cut daffodils for me. I am a regular beneficiary of my neighbor's happy garden but occasionally it's so I can visit with her favorite visitor who is a walking inspiration to me. But let me talk about this painting first...

What do I collect? Majority of what I collect is for my art's sake. So it's art supplies, still life props (cups, vases, scarves, pitchers, metal things, etc.), and even admired artist's works. In this piece I chose a couple objects from my still life props collection. A small glass vase which used to be a perfume bottle but the dipping glass has disappeared or broke from having been packed a few times. And a delicate and unusual bone China cup. Originally I wanted to depict red things I collect because I tend to gravitate toward red nostalgic objects. I chose the title because I bought a basket from a local artist who makes such sweet baskets (and makes them very well!), and I remember picturing it with daffodils inside so I had to give Margaret Alter credit somehow :)

I painted the still life in one day so I'm particularly gratified that I painted what I saw in my head! Painting flowers tend to stress me out because they overwhelm me and I always feel like I need to HURRY UP!!!

Early the following day (yesterday), I was due at my friend's house for a group painting session. Well my neighbor's grand daughter was there too! She is such an amazing girl at 10; mature and so innocent and definitely intelligent. She is blind but I've forgotten her complete diagnosis. I met her when she was rollerskating about 4 years ago in her grandparents' driveway. She also rock climbs but her real passion is horseback riding and she's been winning awards already! Anyway, rather than paint still life with my friends, I decided to attempt an impromptu portrait of her and try a limited palette. I knew it was a bad idea especially when she discovered the chair she was sitting in was a rocking chair! LOL It's hard enough to photograph an active kid and the donut and fruit juice didn't help. Well I didn't really do as well as I hope but it's not as bad as I feared I suppose. And I did resort to taking photo of her and popped the memory card in the laptop for the rest of the session while we tried to make sure we didn't neglect her presence. She even read excerpts from Harry Potter for a bit which I enjoyed because I love HP. All in all a day well spent with good friends!

Calypso Genesis Self Portrait in Oils

This is my submission to a new artist blog challenge hosted by the talented Alice Thompson. The blog is Calypso Moon Artist Movement . This our genesis challenge - to create a self portrait which includes our shoulders because shoulder gestures add insight to the the subject's personality. We were also instructed to choose one color plus black and white in our paintings.

My color choice was yellow ocher by Lefranc. I like that it is both an earthy and warm hue which adds to the mood of my painting. I chose this photo because I've been told people who know me catch me in this position often times. They conclude that I'm a deep thinker :) Actually, if I could step out of myself and see me this way, I can attest that I'm very much in my creative zone and in the middle of mentally painting my next piece or maybe trying to determine a solution to a problem I've encountered on the piece that's been sitting on my easel.

FINALLY we got green light from dear SURPRISE COORDINATOR Jill Polsby to publish out secret portraits of the talented Karin Jurick who is the coordinator of Different Strokes by Different Folks blog. I love how this piece turned out. It is fun to do a piece for a fellow artist who would appreciate a more painterly style vs for clients who expected smoother approach for the most part. I think seeing brush strokes and some preliminary markings who the artist's hand or touch a lot better and I'd find it more personal.

I can't wait to see other works from same photo! Jill sent us a still shot captured from Youtube so it wasn't the best resolution but maybe it's good to have a not so perfect reference....hmmm.

**update! I just got a preview of the book presented to Karin of the 118 portraits painted by like number of participants thanking her for all Karin has done for us and it's impressive and beautiful! Thank you Jill for your hard work and thoughtfulness!

Painting Mom for 2 hours and a cabochon pendant

With my Mom visiting for 3 weeks, I always go out of my way to devote me time with her and "sneak" in business as usual art activities :) Yesterday I excused myself for about 4 hours to do another jewelry piece. So this afternoon my trade was that she'd pose for me so I can paint her from life. I had envisioned 4 hours. But I didn't realize it was going to be like working with a kid LOL! Are you done? Can I see it? I'm tired, can I nap? After responding "No" to all of the above. I finally pointed out the clock to her that it hadn't been as long as she thought. Martha Stewart was after all still talking about Asian noodles on TV (I really thought the show would preoccupy her). After Martha I let her nap. She came back and I put on American Justice for her. Well the crooks had not been given sentence yet and she was done posing. So this was as far as I got -2 hours give or take. Maybe I can refine it tomorrow :)

Mother Baby Portrait done!

What a perfect piece to finish for Mother's Day weekend! This piece started out a little different from my usual approach to my oil portraits. I've been feeling as if I'm in transition and I have to step back and try to see the direction I'm taking. Here is the post of how it I started this piece:

Or maybe it has something to do with the rotator cuff pain I've been enduring for over a year now. Yesterday I finally succumbed to cortisone shot which sent me to full body pain for a whole day. But today is the big relief and I need to jump into my self therapy program immediately.

I actually have more paintings to share which I'll post more soon. I just wanted to share something Mother's Day like for now so I can greet my friends and other readers a very Happy Mother's Day! xox

Mommy Baby WIP II and raspberry still life

The raspberries my husband brought home were so fresh and plump so of course I had to take time to paint some before and the reward was to eat the model YAY! They were definitely pieces of heaven! I do love small pieces of original art as they are so precious like gems that we like to protect and admire upclose. I am enjoying this set so much that I want to keep them and decide if I want to sell them later. Mom bought me these canvases with easels and I don't know where to get them so maybe that's why I am feeling extra attached to these 2.5x2.5 canvases.

Speaking of my Mom she's been diagnosed with some health issues that she's still being tested for (enlarged heart and liquid in her lungs), so please keep her in your most positive thoughts. The umbilical cord is alive and well so I am most definitely feeling very imbalanced over this news especially because I live so far away from her and basically even if I lived with her, there's very little help I could offer. But there's something to be said about one human being roaming this world who I can vouch loves me the most and I could probably humbly claim same position in her life.
I am feeling a bit lost in my Mommy - Baby portrait. I had a definite picture in my mind about it and I somehow lost it lol I am loving the pinkish coralish colors going on. But you know what bugs me the most? That I've painted in the outline of the figures so strongls grrrrrrr for some reason it's impeding my progress. But there ya go, WIP 2!

Mommy Baby oil portrait WIP

This is 18x24 oil on canvas of my hubby's sweet niece and her first baby! She is the first bundle to grace the family since I legally joined the clan about 9 years ago :) Ash is so beautiful to watch with her baby and it touches me so much I just can't help but pay tribute to her loveliness. This is also an opportunity for me to warm up for some portraits I will be doing shortly. Well I'm very pleased with this start. Lately it seems I am enjoying not having a particular plan on under painting. I was mainly using up the mess on my palette to lay down the preliminaries. It's a good start :)

Soon the daffodils will be popping in their heads from my flowerbeds and I will go absolutely nuts if I once again have other things on my easel instead of painting them from life! Spring is coming YAY! (It's still cccold though).

DSDF week 16-18 Portraits

She's done! My humble portrait of the artist assigned to me by Karin Jurick for our end of the year challenge. When I received the email from Karin, she said "Just have fun with it". So I decided to go with my more

playful cubist style. I do really enjoy painting in this style because it's so unpredictable and always playful. She reminds me of Virginia Madsen, I wish I knew who she was. I've sleuthed aroun d the regulars but I failed lol This design reminds me of a happy beginning. As if she's telling the bluebird, "Change is upon us and it's going to be good!" Ok, maybe that's the oil medium speaking lol Please che ck out the wonderful display of varied talents in the DSDF blog! I've also added Janice Warriner's photo that she submitted to Karin which inspired my piece.

Here is one of my bigger cubism painting I've done. It's "Red Moon Over Bella Vista" 4'x5' acrylics. Based on the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel which is pretty much the touring spot in our little own. In the summer of 2005 we enjoyed a 2-week display of a red moon. It truly mesmerized me and I wanted to capture it but I was in the middle of wanting to paint the biggest canvas I've ever attempted, so this is what I ended up painting. I've sold a ton of prints on it but I still have the painting. The gallery asked to display it around Halloween and I keep telling them it's not a Halloween painting :p It's also a job and half to transport it, I always have to ask my friend Linda please give my painting a ride. And Miss Linda is always so accommodating, I hope she never sells her cute white pickup truck. She brought us some cheese wafers for Christmas which is what I blame for the 5 lbs I gained. heehee

I call that part of the chest where loved ones feel they belong perfectly a personal parking space :) I rarely do a commission where I don't have the need to modify the poses before I paint it. Most of the time I have to combine at least 3 photos so the composition doesn't look like a collage when I paint it. **Dec.22, 2008 I've updated this image with the scanned version. Hope you like :)

Incidentally, same client owns this portrait of sweet Snoot Girl Zoey who sadly passed away recently. This painting is from 2000 I think. I've seen this painting hanging on every wall H moves to and I see the images on the Internet, it's so cool so to see my art continued to be enjoyed through the years :)

At this point I feel good about meeting my professional deadlines and now I can do some personal art except there's a big piece I need to finish by end of the month and it's a private piece I can't share others. So if it seems I'm even more scarce online it's because of the holidays and that piece.

It's been brought to my attention that some people post comments and they disappear :( I'm so sorry to hear this - I DON'T DELETE comments unless it's completely offensive, and in which case I contact the poster and ask for their address so I can personally run over their toes. Please don't let the website's occasional burps discourage you from posting. I love comments and am always grateful for the time people take to make their thoughts known to me. :)

Van Gogh, Betty and Baby Mom oil portrait WIP

I had to share that today Mom and I went to the car shop to get my wheelchair tire changed lol! The local wheelchair repair guy couldn't get the stripped stainless steel bolt out about 10 months ago. He was at it for almost 2 hours while I was being charged $45/hr so I had him stop then and let me take the new tire home. But hubby couldn't get the bolt out either. So today we just went for last resort because the old tire was more bald than Savalas. And while we were there we had the van get some love too for some lube and oil. Incidentally they are lovingly referred to as Betty and Van Gogh, right Red?

I was really hoping to get this piece done by now since it's fairly simple and small at 8x10. But I think Mom is getting restless and she was literally cleaning and bumping around me today while I painted so I had to stop and play Scrabble with her. I think the painting is looking so sweet in more ways than one. Sweet in that it's a sweet shot and sweet for artists who just melt when they feel they are hitting the right colors and the feeling they envisioned.

I got final approval for Sandy and Domino and while I was waiting for that email, I went ahead and drew my next one which I've quickly under painted today. A new baby and his momma, 8x10 oil. This will go to Chicago.

Hillary asked me what I meant by final approval and/my process for commissions. First, here are my 6-yr old commission prices. I haven't read it in a while but I guess since I wrote it I agree with it lol!

Anyway I divide the process in 3-4 stages. First, the client "retains" me which to me means, I save a slot in my waiting list for this client for 1/4 or 1/3 of the final fee which is based on size and how complicated the piece will be. This retainer fee is unrefundable because it means their turn is guaranteed and I possibly researched and bought materials for it already. In all likelihood, I was already painting it in my head before I finished the previous piece.

Next I draw the art and get approval for the composition and maybe the likeness too. Then I block in colors and again I get approval for the colors and the look. Somewhere there the next payment is secured. Final payment is sent when the piece is about 95% or more done.

And here is the just about done version of Sandy and Domino, I just need to paint the edges of the canvas :)

Chihuahua oil pet portrait update and wii

Update on Sandy and Domino. Got 100% approval from client on this stage so I will now take it to the finish. However I've decided I will go ahead and lengthen Domin's left leg because it bothers me. She has it pulled in closer to her in the photo but nobody will see the photo so she looks a little odd this way. So I will just give it a little more even look, don't you think? Man will they ever be surprised with the finished product. Most clients don't really know how much better the final look will be and they're basically approving the artwork about 2/3 into it teehee :)

Yes, running behind. We ended up cleaning the house for two days because we don't have a housekeeper. Working from home can really create a mess. And usually one can tell I'm busy with art when the house looks like a war zone, I'm not kidding at all!!! Thank goodness hubby dear is game about helping me clean.

And MOM IS HERE! So I now get daily massages ooooohhhh sooo nice! And you can be proud of me that although Mom, Pops and my sister got us wii sports and fitness bundle for Christmas, and it's now hooked up, I haven't let myself get addicted yet because of the commissions lol But I played tennis, bowled and got strikes 4x in a row, gooofed around golfing, but knocked out my opponent on the 5th round (yes, better than Paquiao) -- all in one night! It was sooo bad for my rotator cuff problem so I'll await Mario Kart which cousin Ed ordered for me, so I can drive. Thanks to Theresa for raging about wii on her blog, I decided it was another active activity hubby and I can do together. So far he LOVES it and has played tennis daily! Believe me, he needs to be pried away from work badly!

I've been working on a few portrait commissions for the last stretch of the holiday season. I was hoping to be done this week in time for my Mom's arrival on Sunday but I don't think it will work in my favor as I have 5 more to go!!!! I might be able to finish three this week and one next week but the big one I have until end of December. For some reason my brain knows exactly when my deadline is so the rest of my body will find all kinds of obstacles so I only have but a small window to meet my deadlines. Do any of my artist friends know what I mean, I wonder?

I had a lovely Thanksgiving I hope you all did too! I got full too fast for my liking so I didn't get more than 3 slices of turkey at my SIL's. So yesterday I roasted our own turkey :) In fact I roasted just the turkey body (is there a more proper way to say that?), as in no limbs. And I think that's the way to go for us because neither one likes the dark meat. We also met for the first time our first grand niece, little Ava Elise, who is every bit as pretty as her name! I'm sure to paint her at some point and I will share it with you.

I LOVE how my grandma's book turned out!!!!!!! Excellent quality I completely endorse Snapfish.com photobooks! I know my Mom will SO CRY, she will be all weepy at Christmas Eve when I give this to her mwuahahahahaha! I got her 3 books so she can give copies to a couple of her sisters. She has 4 sisters but these books aren't cheap.... in fact I will get myself a copy later. But I made another book which is about portraits I've done. (the title is "My Favorite Portraits"). I wanted to try the book with dust jacket for one thing. But I prefer the hard cover. The jacket will fall apart faster than the cover which doesn't have anything written on it. On the cover is the 3"x4" oil portrait I did of my Mom which printed beautifully even as a bigger version of the original. Ok I must go back to painting!

Double Oil Portrait Commission WIP#1

Here's a current commission I can share with you in progress with permission from my client since her hubby already knows of this anniversary gift. In fact, she just wanted a portrait of him, but when he found out, it made him sad that she was not going to be in the portrait, sweet huh? They look like a Hollywood teen couple, I told her she reminds me of Lindsay Lohan. It's 11x14 oil in its under painting stage. I'm really enjoying this project as it's a portrait of a couple just as in love since they were teenagers - and they recently married off their college aged daughter! It will be painted in full color and of course you can follow the progress along. Ugh I already see many things that need adjusting.

Well I voted (early) today! I can't believe how long the line was! My friend Linda was kind enough to drive me so I can vote. We got there at 10:01, a minute after they supposedly opened and there was already a long line! Way to go, I say! Your vote counts, I don't care how you vote, but if you don't vote, I don't want to hear any belly achin' coming from you about the country!

Is it me or does it seem like there's never enough time to do everything? lol What would it take to feel more in control of our time? It seems it's always a choice between painting and clearing the kitchen sink or folding the clean laundry, etc. (I usually choose painting lol)

Family Oil Portrait commission

This is a portrait commission from a client from North Carolina who has been a few times a return client. The client wanted to make sure her Mom's favorite lamp was also in the painting :)

Anyway, this post is really about children. We don't have kids but it doesn't stop me from being protective of the ones I am exposed to.

Unfortunately I've witnessed some of this sort activities online when I first started to explore the Internet chats. And I can't believe how one easily falls prey to people with ill intents. I ended up playing "Mom" to those I've become aware about until it just became no fun to socialize online any more because I couldn't really help them effectively.

Just like the real world, the Internet is particularly dangerous to those who are new to its possibilities. This bill will help pave some new directions to help protect not just the children but also the rest of us who wander through the infinite world of this new dimension.

But I also do wish every computer, and Internet cable would come with a manual for adults on how they need to pay attention to the young ones and get more involved in their lives so they know who the children are associating with and be aware of their environment because we can't expect the government or the teachers and priest or ministers, etc., to do the job that should be implemented and regularly done at home.

Ok that's my contribution :) And before I go off to experiment if I can duplicate PF Chang Restaurant's lettuce wrap chicken, I now leave you with something autumn and delicious!

Hillary's Oil Portrait and silk art

Hurray I have successfully pulled my bestest friend into the blogging world! This is a portrait I did of her, my dear Hillary Miller, when were still in college circa (cough cough)... oh excuse me I've had this terrible cough for months! ANYWAY, she has quickly gotten the hang of it as evident of her contribution to Daily Watercolors blog . Her very own blog will begin Hillary Miller Art Works to develop quickly especially because I've now put the pressure on her lol Which by isn't fair because she does a lot of outdoor shows with her gorgeous, and I mean GORGEOUS hand-painted silk scarves! Check them out here Hillary Miller's Silk Tallit and other Scarves They are very soft and silky and can be made to order from floral to landscape designs, etc. Of course watercolors and silk scarves aren't all she does. She paints in oils, acrylics and does pottery among other things. Plus she is has taught art in colleges and in her own studio. Maybe she will give us a tour of her lovely studio some time :) She's a busy girl, in fact, in a couple days she will be leaving for Palo Alto show in Northern California.

Does anybody happen to know what master painter or "his" painting I've thrown Hillary into?

Reluctantly I list

WELL I was looking at my calendar the other day and I came to realize the fundraising auction I painted my political portraits for isn't happening until November 8th - which is after election. And that just spoils all my fun :( How am I supposed to have my personal election after the fact? SO today I've decided to go ahead and list the on Ebay. Today I started new 5x5 painting for the fundraiser lol

I haven't listed there for many months which is inadvisable practice if one wishes to attract their usual crowd. But let's just give it a go shall we?
